Michelle and Derek’s spring Hyatt Lodge wedding in Oak Book is hitting the blog today!
I virtually “met” this couple almost a year and a half ago, and then I officially met these two last spring at their engagement session. I have adored them from the start! They found my work back in February 2020 through a friend and one of our brides, Marybeth – I’m forever thankful for that connection.
I’m honored to share a look into Michelle and Derek’s wedding day!
From the Couple
We met through mutual friends who are also getting married this year. My (Michelle’s) friend from high school went to college in Grand Rapids where she met her fiance Brendan, who is Derek’s best friend (and previous roommate). We spent the first two years of our relationship doing long-distance where we learned to really value our time together and perfect our communication. We loved getting to know each other’s cities and packed most weekends with fun things.
A turning point for both of us was a trip we went on about a year into dating. We went to Vegas with very few things planned and had the most amazing time. That was when we realized we would have fun doing absolutely nothing. We both love seeing new places and live music. Derek loves to snowboard (I am learning slowly), and he does yoga with me.
We just got our golden retriever puppy Winnie in January and are learning how to be puppy parents, which is actually much harder compared to being a cat parent to our black cat Hank! Derek proposed at a park in Arizona, where two of his sisters and now his parents live. One of the things we are looking forward to doing after the pandemic is getting to know Chicago more since Derek moved only a few months before lockdown began. We both are close with our families.
The Wedding Day
Michelle and Derek’s wedding day took place at the beautiful Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook. This was our first wedding (of hopefully many!) there, and it did not disappoint. It’s a hidden gem of Chicagoland, nestled in forestry, that’s for sure!
The day started with everyone getting ready – and running ahead of schedule – so before we knew it, Michelle and Derek were off to their first look. They shared a quiet moment together and their reactions said it all… The smiles and happy tears were incredible!
After the first look, we synced up with the wedding party throughout the Hyatt Lodge grounds. And gosh, they are beautiful! I loved spending time with Michelle, Derek, and their big wedding party that day. Everyone was so kind, welcoming, and up for anything! Even despite the chilly 60-degree May day… As photos wrapped up, Michelle and Derek tucked away before their outdoor ceremony. One of my favorite parts of this wedding day was the ceremony. Derek’s sister officiated the ceremony, and I loved the sentiment and connection. It was so well done!
Then, it was time to party, sneak out for sunset photos (what a gorgeous sunset!), and dance the night away! Michelle and Derek are an amazing couple, and we loved spending their wedding day behind the lens!
Michelle & Derek – Thank you for trusting us to photograph your wedding day! You two have been wonderful to work with, and we adore you and your loved ones! Thank you, thank you!!
