I first met the Phillips family when they joined me for a holiday mini session last year, and I’ve been looking forward to this session with them ever since. This spring, they welcomed a new little one and officially became a family of four. Getting to document this next chapter for them was an honor!
This session was simple and sweet, which is always my favorite kind of session here at the studio. Soft light, genuine connection, and all the little in-between moments that tell the story of this season so beautifully.
One of the things I love most about newborn sessions like this is navigating the dynamic of welcoming a new baby while also caring for an older sibling, especially when that sibling is still a toddler. These sessions have such a unique rhythm, and my approach is always centered around creating a calm, flexible experience for the whole family.
First and foremost, studio newborn sessions are baby-led. I follow the baby’s cues during our entire time together. Whether that means pausing for a feeding, a diaper change, extra snuggles with mom, or a little time being gently rocked, we go with the flow. There is never any pressure to rush, because those moments are part of the story, too.
Just as importantly, I take intentional time to connect with your toddler. I want them to feel seen, comfortable, and included from the very beginning. We chat, we play, and I meet them right where they are. While we’re absolutely there to document your new baby, it’s so important to me that the experience doesn’t feel like everything suddenly revolves around the newest addition. I love asking toddlers what they think about their new sibling and if they’d like to hold them for a photo. Sometimes they are all in, eager and excited to show off their new baby. Other times, they’re a little more hesitant or completely uninterested, and that’s okay, too. There is no one “right” way for them to show up in these moments.
What matters most is this: I never force anything. My goal is always to create space for your family to simply be together. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but I allow the session to unfold naturally. That’s where the magic really happens… In the moments that reflect your family exactly as you are in this season.
