There’s something extra special about getting to photograph your own family, and this session with the Wilson family will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only is this my sister-in-law’s crew, but this session also marked such a meaningful season… I can hardly believe our niece is about to turn nine. Nine! It feels like just yesterday she was a baby in our arms, and now here she is, full of personality, confidence, and so grown up.
We photographed their session while visiting them in Texas, and everything about it felt like magic. That warm, glowy sunset showed up for us. During the session, I remember telling them it was my favorite kind of sunset. It was truly the best note to end our trip on! It also had me so excited to get back home and kick off outdoor session season here in Central Illinois.
As I was editing these images, I kept coming back to how much I love photographing families in this stage of life. When your kids are babies and toddlers, it feels like everything is changing by the minute. You’re documenting first steps, first words, and all those early milestones. But once those early years pass, it’s so easy to let family photos slip to the bottom of the list. This is your gentle reminder not to…
Photos with “older” kids matter just as much. This season, when their personalities are fully blooming, when conversations are deeper, when you can see glimpses of who they are becoming, deserves to be documented, too. There is so much beauty in capturing your family as it is right now. The laughter, the connection, the way they still lean into you even as they grow more independent.
This sunset family session is such a perfect example of just that. These are the moments that deserve to be remembered just as much as those early years.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos, consider this your nudge. This season is worth capturing. I would love to help you tell your family’s story!
