There is something so special about returning to a family’s home year after year to document another season of their story, and the Whitsman family’s recent session was one of those evenings I’ll be thinking about for a long time. This session celebrated sweet Lainey’s three-month milestone, and it has been such a joy watching this family grow. After photographing milestone sessions for her older brothers over the years, it’s been incredibly special to now document Lainey’s first year, from her newborn session to this beautiful summer evening together.
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night. The summer weather was comfortable, the sunset put on a beautiful show, and their yard made the perfect backdrop for such a meaningful milestone. Rather than rushing from one location to the next, we simply spent the evening together—capturing Lainey snuggled in Mom and Dad’s arms, laughing with her big brothers, and even including the family’s pup for a few photos. These are the kinds of sessions I love most because they tell the story of what life really looks like in this season.
Three months is such a sweet age to photograph. Babies are becoming more expressive every day, sharing those first big smiles, making eye contact, and beginning to interact with the people they love most. While this stage often passes by in the blink of an eye, photographs have a way of preserving those little details that parents never want to forget.
As I drove home that evening, I couldn’t stop thinking about how perfect the session had been. It was one of those classic summer nights with beautiful light, happy kids, and nowhere to be except soaking in time together. If every summer session looked like this one, I’d gladly photograph them all season long.
