One of the greatest joys of this job is getting to watch families grow over the years! I first met the Nenn family when they welcomed their second child. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of documenting several chapters of their family’s story. This summer, they welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Grace. It was such a joy to see them settle into life as a family of five! Every time they step in front of my camera, I’m reminded how thankful I am that this career allows me to build relationships that continue long after our first session together.
Their newborn session at Studio 388 was filled with all of the sweet moments that make this season of life so special. Tiny stretches, love from her brothers, and so many snuggles as everyone adjusted to having a new little sister in the family. It was the perfect reminder that newborn sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about documenting this fleeting season exactly as it is.
Before almost every newborn session, parents often tell me they’re nervous about how their toddler or older children will do. If that’s you, I hope this session encourages you to take a deep breath! Children are adjusting to a huge life change when a new baby arrives, and I never expect them to sit perfectly still or smile on command. Instead, I meet your family exactly where you’re at. We take breaks when we need them, feed the baby, let little ones explore the studio, and give everyone plenty of time to warm up. Some toddlers jump right in while others need a little extra encouragement, and both are completely okay.
One thing that helps make newborn sessions feel relaxed is the way I structure them. We begin with family photos and sibling portraits while everyone is fresh and ready to go. Once we’ve finished those images, the older kiddos are free to enjoy a snack, play in the studio, or simply relax with a parent while I finish photographing baby with mom and dad. It keeps the experience enjoyable for everyone and allows us to create genuine images without expecting kiddos to sit through an entire session.
Watching the Nenn family embrace this new season together was incredibly special. Grace is already so loved, and seeing her brothers interact with her made my heart so happy! These moments pass far too quickly! I’m so grateful they trusted me to preserve them. It’s families like theirs that remind me why I love documenting these milestones year after year. I can’t wait to see what this next chapter holds for them!
