One of my favorite things about being a family photographer is that so many of my clients first stood in front of my camera on their wedding day. Amie and Ben are one of those couples! I had the honor of photographing their destination wedding several years ago, and since then, I’ve had the privilege of documenting more milestones as they’ve built their family together. Watching those relationships continue long after the wedding day is a beautiful gift!
This summer, we met at their family farm for an evening that perfectly reflected this season of life. Their son happily explored tractors, wandered around the property, and reminded all of us just how quickly little boys grow. There was no need for elaborate props or a perfectly styled location because this place already held so much meaning for their family. It was the perfect backdrop for preserving memories they’ll treasure for years to come.
As families move beyond that first year with a new baby, one of the questions I’m asked most often is how frequently they should continue scheduling family photos. I almost always recommend documenting baby’s first year with newborn, six-month, and one-year sessions, with an optional 18-month session if you’d like to capture one more season before toddlerhood takes off. After that, I encourage families to schedule one session each year!
Kiddos change so much from year to year that those annual sessions quickly become part of your family’s legacy. Their personalities develop, new interests emerge, and every season brings something unique worth remembering. Looking back at this couple from their wedding day to chasing their little one around on the family farm is the perfect reminder of just how quickly life changes.
I’m incredibly thankful they’ve continued inviting me into those moments! I look forward to documenting many more milestones for their family in the years ahead.
