Your wedding hairstyle is quite the decision, I hear that…The style you choose marries with all your wedding details and is the style you will look back on for years to come. No pressure, right? As a hairstylist that specializes in bridal styling, I love to create hair that’s perfect for you – from your everyday lifestyle to your wedding day. And after over a decade in the industry, I’m here to share my top ten ways to have picture-perfect hair on your wedding day. Let’s dive in!

1) Hire the professional

Yes, ask a professional to do your hair for your wedding! Better yet, ask your hairstylist if they specialize in bridal styling. Not all hairdressers specialize, enjoy, or have experience in photo-worthy bridal hair, so please keep this in mind! Chances are – if your hairstylist doesn’t specialize in bridal styling, they will have a recommendation of someone they trust in the industry.

2) Do the trial

More often than not, the style that you see on Pinterest looks very different in real life when composed of your real hair. Doing a trial allows you to see what the style looks like from more than one angle in a photo online. Make sure to take photos of your trial as reference to what needs to be altered and tweaked on the wedding day!

3) Buy the extensions

Almost everything you see online has added hair extensions. Hair extensions don’t just add length… They can add thickness, volume on the sides, and even just extra hair styled into an updo. Extensions don’t need to be expensive, but I always recommend purchasing the extensions that are made of human hair (not synthetic) so that it can be heated and styled.

Styles in different hair colors look different. Often we see a lot of blondes when scrolling because highly dimensional hair shows the most movement when curled. For the best ideas for your own wedding style, try searching for specifics such as “brunette updo’ or “red hair bridal style”. It will give you a much better visual representation of how that braid you’ve been dreaming of will look on your big day!

5) Consider the timeline of your day

Wedding days often start early and end dancing into the night so, of course, you want your hair to last! I always share with my brides that your hairstyle needs to be realistic considering the longevity of the day. After your hair is completed, how many hours later will you get the majority of your photos? How many hours later will it be until your ceremony? Ask these questions, consult the day-of timeline, and make a plan!

6) Messy or Sleek

Most often, full-bodied hair photographs very beautifully. Some brides like a more lived-in look with texture and others prefer a smoother shape. They are both a wonderful choice, but they do look quite a bit different. I encourage you to lean into the style you’re most drawn to, and the style that fits with your overall wedding vibe!

7) Hair moves

Hair that is pinned into an updo or upstyled shouldn’t move. However, hair that is left down and “half-up” will have to allow movement. That movement throughout the day can alter the original style. Just keep this in mind!

These lightweight fillers can be placed sneakily inside any bun or updo to create a voluminous shape. They are comfortable, inexpensive, and always a good option for someone looking to add body to their hairstyle.

9) Veils and accessories

Choosing what goes into your hairstyle is a fun way to personalize your look. Veils are once in a lifetime and photograph beautifully with a little wind. Accessories can really make a simple hairstyle look incredibly formal with a sparkly decorative clip, pin, or bridal vine.

10) Be yourself

Feeling confident will always look amazing. So roll with it, whether you want that effortless vibe or that grand princess for a day feel. You won’t regret being yourself and choosing a bridal hairstyle that is YOU!

So there you have it – my top ten ways to have picture-perfect hair on your wedding day! My forever motto in life and weddings? Live beautifully. Love your hair. Sending you love – Megan
