Advice for creative entrepreneurs and small business owners to stop confusing "busy" with "productive" with Chicagoland wedding photographer and mentor Kara Evans Photographer. When it comes to sharing advice with fellow creative entrepreneurs, one of the greatest things I believe I could share is this… It is life and business changing to stop confusing “busy” with “productive”. And here’s why…

Okay, I get it. We are ALL busy.

We all have our own moments, days, and even seasons of busy – I’m not discounting that one bit. But I think we, as creatives and society as a whole, glorify being busy. We’re learning (and even encouraging each other online without realizing it!) that it’s OK to glorify busy when it really might not be the best thing for our wellbeing, our relationships, our lives, and our businesses. Being busy doesn’t mean we’re being productive – that’s where most of us, myself included, often get confused!

It’s easy to look back at the past month and say… “Goodness, we were so busy that the last month was a blur.” And I know it’s easy to look at yesterday and say… “Where did the day go? It was so busy!” Yes, these are all valid feelings, but I think we glorify busy in a super confusing way with the language we’re using. Are we busy or are we productive? Are our days full or so busy we can’t see straight?

Friends, I’m guilty here, too, and think we could ALL learn a little something here. I challenge us to start looking at the language we are using in our day to day.

Let’s stop confusing “busy” with “productive”…

Let’s start looking at our days from a place of fullness that drives our productivity – not busy that stunts our productivity in the end. Let’s make a shift from I HAVE TO do “x, y, z” to I GET TO do “x, y, z”.

Flipping the script and challenging ourselves to change our language is not only going to help us identify that we live full lives but it will also allow us to run our businesses from a place of productivity. Think about it this way… I get to take the dog for a walk after a long day or I get to work with wonderful brides and creatives. My life and days are full and productive, not busy. Don’t value your life and businesses in a way that you say… I was so busy that I hardly had time to walk the dog or I am so busy photographing weddings and mentoring creatives. Value your life and business in a way that says… I get to.

My life and days are full and productive, not busy.

I truly believe that when we start to shift our language and stop confusing “busy” for “productive”, we will start to value the fullness of our lives even more. And best yet? We will feel as though our time is so much more productive and valuable, too. Because after all, we get to do all these things, love on our family and friends, and serve our clients day in and day out.
