I love talking, planning, and squealing with excitement before sessions, weddings, and events with my clients. I always try to answer any and all questions with honesty and transparency – I understand that you want to know what you’re getting from By Kara… I would want to know, too! Believe me, I’ve been in your shoes before!

So, today’s post is focused on some “behind the scenes” questions about my business, process, and inspiration. My hope is that this will better help to frame what my goal in capturing love and life is all about. Here we go!

– What inspires you?

Love. The moments in life that take your breath away. When you see an elderly couple strolling down the street hand in hand… The times when you feel happiness creeping in and you absolutely cannot deny it. That’s what inspires me.

– Are you a self-taught photographer?

For the most part, yes. I have taken classes and attended a few conferences, but I continually learn from the photography community around me – reading, lots of reading, observing, watching videos, and shooting. Photographing love and life push me to learn more with each and every session. 

– When is your favorite time to photograph?

I love shooting in the warm, golden, and glowing light of summer evenings. There is something about the gorgeous summer light that makes me feel so fulfilled and faithful in creating. 

But don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a snowy session, capturing the blooming colors of spring, and the warm oranges and reds of fall. Every season brings me happiness as another season to photograph.

– Do you specialize in a certain area of photography?

I am a portrait photographer without a speciality in one area, but I photograph families and weddings (couples) most often. 

– What is your favorite tool as a photographer?

Lightroom 5. I love the streamlined, less stress workflow that it allows me to have!

– What is your go-to lens?

Time and time again my 50mm f/1.8 wins (upgrading to the 1.4 for a little boost, too). Ninety-seven percent of the time I use this lens. I’ve been hooked ever since I picked it up for the first time. It allows such a natural, real perspective on life. I’m a prime lens kinda gal.

– What makes your work most personal to you?

The relationships. My work is all about relationships. Creating them. Maintaining them. Capturing them. These relationships are so personal and valuable to me. Clients are trusting me to photograph their natural, true relationships and to tell their stories… It doesn’t get much more personal than that.
