Hey, I’m Kara!
I'm a family photographer and studio owner based in Kankakee, Illinois. My joy is helping families pause, celebrate, and remember life’s milestones – from new babies to growing little ones, and all the in-between moments.

It’s that time of the year! The Pantone color of the year for 2021 is here… But this year, there is not only one color but TWO – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating!

Pantone’s announcement of two colors this time around takes me back to 2016 when they announced two colors for the year!

It’s true – I love taking a look at the Pantone color of the year from a wedding lens… But this year, whew, my first reaction was no way. After I explore more inspiration and let my creative mind run free, I really do appreciate these colors – especially Ultimate Gray. Big fan of that one now, that’s for sure! Maybe I’ll come around on Illuminating…

Looking back on past wedding seasons and even engagement sessions, Ultimate Gray has already been here from apparel to paper goods to little touches in between. I love that! And I’ve seen touches of Illuminating, too. Here are a handful of ways I think we might see Ultimate Gray and Illuminating in the upcoming 2021 wedding season!

1) Wedding Party Attire

This is an easy one… We are going to see Ultimate Gray practically EVERYWHERE in wedding party attire from menswear to dresses to even family and guest attire, too!

2) Flowers

Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of bright yellows and it’s just a fact that there aren’t many gray flower options. Once I started to look at wedding flowers our past couples have chosen, I started to see the light. Simple, soft touches of Illuminating can be so pretty in wedding flowers!

3) Engagement Sessions

Engagement sessions will be one of the easiest times to incorporate the new year’s Pantones. I mean, from sportscoats to dresses to ties… Engagement session outfits can be all about the new Pantone colors if you want them to be!

4) Paper Goods

And last, but not least, paper goods… Paper goods are a simple, understated place to incorporate the new Pantone colors. I love this classic way to still add touches of trend!

Here’s to unique wedding styles and seeing touches of Ultimate Gray and Illuminating throughout the 2021 wedding season!
