As a self-proclaimed cake connoisseur, it just seems fitting to share a fun Friday Five blog post! If you know me, you know I love all the cake, so this post shouldn’t come as a surprise to you… Let’s dive into my favorite cake flavors!

#5 – Spice Cake

Throughout my four years of high school, I worked weekends on the catering staff for a local business. Thinking back – maybe that was my first real life glimpse into the wedding industry sparking my passion for serving couples on their wedding days. But if anything, those catering days gave me my love for spice cake. The owner of the venue and catering business I worked for was also a brilliant baker and made the best spice cake I’ve ever had to this day. It was perfectly sweet paired with spice yet not too strong, so of course this cake is one of my favorite cake flavors. I love thinking back to those days, and now, whenever the fall and winter seasons roll around and I have the opportunity to enjoy a slice of spice cake, you better bet I do!

#4 – Cherry Almond

Yum, yum, yum! Cherry almond is one of those cake flavors that snuck up on me. So, if you will, it’s a newly discovered favorite of mine… Like we’re talking within the last six months! My favorite local bakery – Two Whisks Bakery – introduced me to this gem, and they absolutely knock this flavor out of the park. The almond cake paired with cherry icing… Mmmm, now I’m thinking I need to make a trip to the bakery to see if they have any of this favorite that I could grab and go home with!

#3 – Lemon with Strawberry Filling

Our wedding cake was a lemon cake with strawberry filling… I mean goodness, doesn’t that just sound delightful? That’s because, IT WAS! While I only had a bite of it (big regrets here people!) when Kyle and I had our formal cake cutting, it was absolutely delicious. I remember placing a piece at our sweetheart table during our reception to come back to, but when I did someone else had already enjoyed it… I think I still dream about that cake to this day – ha! Now, I always tell my couples to make sure they enjoy the cake, pie, or sweets they have at their receptions or they will regret it like me! I don’t see this cake flavor often at weddings, but I love grabbing a cupcake or slice of lemon cake with strawberry filling any chance I can get.

#2 – Vanilla

I know, I know… Vanilla? Friends, I just love a good vanilla cake. It’s my go-to flavor on wedding days or at events when I visit the sweets table. It’s true, I’m usually not disappointed by a classic vanilla cupcake. Especially if the icing is not too sweet (shoutout to my fav icing at Two Whisks Bakery!) and just right!

#1 – German Chocolate

And then there’s the end all be all cake for me – German chocolate cake! I’m not drooling, you’re drooling! This cake has been one of my very favorites since way back when, and I’ve always loved coconut. I remember when I was around 8 years old and baked my very first cake (yes, it was German chocolate!) for a 4-H cookout. I was so proud to have baked the cake all by myself with just a little help from my parents. After the cake was finished baking, it needed time to cool, and I was feeling so excited to share this cake with my pals at the cookout!

Then, the next thing I knew our chocolate lab named Ali had her feet on the counter and was diving face first into MY FIRST CAKE. You can imagine the horror… My mom thought something was seriously wrong by the way I screamed and came running into the kitchen. And I’m sure you can imagine how things continued to unfold… Mom got the dog out of the cake, calmed me down, mom and dad hunted down another cake mix from my grandma’s house a few blocks away, and I still arrived to the cookout with my (second) German chocolate cake. This hilarious memory still has us looking back and laughing, and you know what? German chocolate is still my very favorite cake flavor of them all!

So, there you have it coming from a self-proclaimed cake connoisseur and wedding photographer… My five favorite cake flavors! ??
