What a wonderful read! My sweet friend, Michaela, recommended this book to me, and I am oh so glad that she did! Love Your Life Not Theirs by Rachel Cruze came into my life at the perfect time… At the start of the new year and as we inched closer to the one year mark in our journey to becoming debt free.
I loved the flow of this book! It’s divided into seven sections that focus on habits you should have while living the life you want. Goodness, so so good! I don’t want to give away ALL the habits, but they focus on quitting comparisons, making a plan for your money, saving, thinking, giving, and more.
In the day and age of social media and our personal journey to become debt free, this book was good for my soul and exactly what I needed… Love Your Life Not Theirs reminded me that the comparison game is REAL in today’s world, but we, as individuals, have the power to push past comparison – it’s all about our choice. This habit of quitting comparisons was the biggest truth bomb for me while reading the book, and I’m thankful that it was early on in the book and continued to be sprinkled throughout the entire read. It’s crazy to me that, “We are spending money we may or may not have just to keep up with a life we think we are missing out on.” Why, why, why? Because we think that’s what we’re supposed to do. This book was such an eye-opener when it comes to the comparison game and looking at my own life.
If there’s anything I’ve learned from this book and our personal journey, it’s that it is okay that everyone is at a different point in this journey. We only know the in’s and out’s of our very unique and personal life, so it’s important to stay in your own lane. Try not to compare and try not to tell yourself that you need things you don’t just because someone else has it and seems “happy”. And as Rachel said, “No one else can hand you your values. You have to figure that out for yourself. And, once you do, you’ll be prepared to arrange your life in pursuit of those values.” But also to another token… It’s okay to plan and save and ENJOY life. You simply have to be smart and have a plan!
“Most of the expectations you think people have of you simply don’t exist; these are expectations you put on yourself…” – Rachel Cruze
WOW. Talk about a moment of humility that leads to finding grace and balance and better habits! As for Kyle and I, we are totally okay with being “weird” as we continue this journey of learning how to give, save, and live.
Trust me, the comparison game is real in my life (probably always will be on some level), but I’m thankful to be taking steps to be better aware of myself, my actions, and how to simply be better in this life. It’s true, I 100% recommend this read!
